Earlier in the interview with Mr. Baier, Mr. Trump appeared to concede that even after the Justice Department issued a subpoena last year for all classified documents in his possession, he delayed complying with it in order to separate any personal records that might have been among them.
Baier put Trump on the spot about attacks he’s faced from his own Cabinet members and questions about how he’d even staff the White House if he’s elected.

He suggested DeSantis “loved” Dr. Anthony Fauci and defended his own decision to listen to Fauci at the time by saying, “You’re not actually allowed to fire him — but I wouldn’t usually let that get in my way.”
However, DeSantis waited longer than many other states to even declare a stay-at-home order, which he officially issued on April 1, 2020. By contrast, California, the first state to issue a stay-at-home order, did so on March 19. Only a handful of states, with more rural populations, never issued such an order, including Arkansas, Nebraska, North Dakota, and Wyoming.
By April 20, DeSantis had already appointed a “Re-Open Florida Task Force,” which he tasked with quickly forming a plan to reopen the state. The stay-at-home order expired in early May, and by late September, DeSantis had lifted all restrictions on restaurants and businesses.
Trump, meanwhile, was questioning Georgia governor Brian Kemp’s decision to reopen certain facilities in the Peach State on April 22.
The former president defended his own leadership during Covid-19 and suggested the disease spread from China because of “incompetence” in the Chinese government.

During an interview with Fox News host Bret Baier that aired Tuesday, Trump, 77, was asked, “In your mind, did the COVID vaccine work?”
The former president dodged the question, instead praising his administration’s efforts at promoting Regeneron’s antibody treatment for COVID and then claiming to have a “Democrat friend who’s very smart” who has questioned why he doesn’t talk more about his work rolling out COVID vaccines.
“You may have saved in the world, throughout the world, 100 million people, and you never talk about it,” Trump recalled his friend telling him.
“I said: ‘I really don’t want to talk about it, because, as a Republican, it’s not a great thing to talk about, because, for some reason, it’s just not.’” the former president told Baier.

Baier noted that under his administration the Pentagon mandated COVID vaccines for members of the armed forces, a fact-check Trump did not acknowledge.
“But you have a lot of people that love the vaccines. I mean, you do. They happen to be more Democrat than they are Republican,” the 2024 GOP presidential primary front-runner said.

During his sit down with Baier, Trump also suggested that his attacks against his top 2024 opponent, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, are personal and the result of disloyalty on the part of the Sunshine State governor.
“I got him elected. And I thought he was very disloyal when he said: Yes, I’d run,” Trump said when asked about why he refers to the Florida governor as “Ron DeSanctimonious.”
