Penny Wong, Australia’s foreign minister, will visit the Chinese capital this week after being invited by her counterpart Wang Yi to participate in the sixth Australia–China Foreign and Strategic Dialogue.
Anthony Albanese, the current Australian prime minister who regularly cites Whitlam’s influence, has worked alongside Wong to ease tension with China.
Albanese met Chinese leader Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the G20 conference in Bali last month, which was the first bilateral meeting between leaders of the two countries since 2016.
The move raised hopes among Australian businesses that sanctions could be lifted. “Australia seeks a stable relationship with China; we will cooperate where we can, disagree where we must and engage in the national interest,” Albanese and Wong said in a joint statement.
